Desktop sync from 3g network (cell network)

Postby rashadwell » Fri Sep 17, 2010 9:27 am

it was mentioned in the pocketmoney sync video that it would be possible to sync with the desktop over the 3g network by port forwarding and tweaking the setup. anybody have any idea how to do this? i have successfully set up the sync for iphone to iphone. my iphone and my wifes iphone. also i have successfully setup the sync between the iphones and the desktop will on the wifi network.

now what i would like to do is be able to sync while at the grocery store to the desktop thru the 3g.

by the way, this is the best app out there. keep up the good work.

shad.

use the psp setup for the router but instead of using the dns1 and dns2 settings use the internet ip address from your router and it works.

It's pretty simple, but depending on routers and various things it can be a bit complicated.

(My terminology might not be correct, but here's the gist.)

Typically the home computer is hidden behind a firewall or router so it will have two IP addresses one for your local network and one for the world wide web. You need to tell your home router how to map the external IP address to your local IP address, and open the port so data can be sent through.

  • Setup Port Mapping - redirects a computer outside your local network to the proper place
    • In Airport Utility select your base station go to Manual > Advanced > Port Mapping (this will be different on different devices)
    • Add a new service and set the public TCP port to 9191, the private IP address to the local IP address for your computer running PMD on your home network, and set the private TCP port to 9191.
  • Run PMD (hovering over the Sync icon will show your local IP address)
  • On iPhone enter the public IP address of your home computer. (You can get it by opening a web page on your desktop computer to http://checkip.dyndns.org/. Depending on your internet service the public IP might not change very often or it might change a lot -- better if it changes infrequently)
  • Tap Sync in PocketMoney on iPhone.

When syncing like this PMD normally gives a "success" message when the sync is done. However this message blocks the connection from a subsequent sync attempt until the user clicks "ok" in order to clear it, then another sync connection is allowed. Is there a way to code PMD the option to not give a sync "success" message or allow for another connection to be made even though the message hasn't been cleared? When trying to sync from a remote location this provides a stumbling block.

Not sure what happened here, did you reply to this?

Your message was on the old server so I copied it over to here, but then I forgot to reply to it.

I've filed it as a bug to fix in 1.0.1 so that you can do remote syncs and not have the dialog box block subsequent syncs.

Hi to all. I discussed this topic with Hardy over the email but still want to ask again here. I was asking if it would be possible to arrange PM to sync through dropbox. Hardy advise what people would not want to have there financial database somewhere in the cloud. Well I have my 1Password database in dropbox which contains much more valuable info and am have no problem with it.

Will it be possible to have this as an option for those who want to use this service? I'd love my PM on iPhone, iPad and Mac to sync automatically over dropbox. As does 1Password, OmniFocus (through it's own server) and other apps.

It really gets annoying to push sync button and change ip addresses on iPhone and iPad all the time I enter new transactions.

Thanks

Not only no, but "Hell, No"! You're playing with fire by putting your passwords out on servers that can be hacked as is; why not publish your SSAN, DL#, etc. publicly too?

I don't have to change IP addresses every time I sync. It is only after I have had to restart my iMac and I get a new IP address from my router that I have to do it and even then it is just the last group that changes.

I'm probably not going to use DropBox as my personal use of it requires too much mental work to make sure you aren't updating the files at the same time. I'll be implementing an optional service later this year that will let you sync through a pocketmoney.com server. Then the choice will be yours to use the service and have your data on a third party server or to sync privately with PMD.

The other thing you can do with your home network is set your desktop computer to a fixed ip address, then you won't ever have to change it.

You are playing with fire using emails, internet banking and any electronic way to transferring data. And your home PC is of course impossible to hack. I not have to worry that my droopbox account will be hacked and my 1Password database is stolen coz it is encrypted. Or was it ever cracked? Ever?

Use dropbox or other cloud service is upto the users. If you are not comfortable with it fine, sync with your desktop.
If there would be decent encryption of the synced database I have no problem with it.

Most routers support Dynamic DNS, and you can get a free account at dyndns.org. This way you never have to worry when your ISP changes your IP address.

Also most routers also support mapping an internal MAC address to an IP address. If your using a Linksys or Dlink, take a look under your DHCP settings. With those two options sorted you will never have to type an IP again.

I have followed all instructions for setting up port forwarding on my Cisco Valet M20, but still cannot sync from 3G. Any help would be appreciated.
