Transfers out (but not in!) being included in budget

Postby Bushell » Tue Aug 30, 2011 12:15 pm

I've been using PM for about 2 years with no problems, but today noticed that the 'saved' amount on my budget screen is incorrect. It's also suddenly incorrect for all previous months (I'm pretty sure I didn't have a deficit of £4k last month!).

The problem is that the budget screen has started including transfers out of accounts as an expense, but isn't recognising the transfer in to the other account.

E.g.
- The accounts screen shows a current balance of £1,000. The budgets screen shows I've saved £500.
- I transfer £100 to cash. Current balance obviously still £1,000, but now I've only saved £400.
- I transfer the £100 back to my current account, and now I've only saved £300!

As a workaround for this month I've entered each side separately as a withdrawal/deposit to a 'transfers' category which nets off to zero, but it's not ideal as I have a lot of accounts and a lot of transfers.

I hadn't updated PM or my iOS prior to the problem starting. I've just updated to the latest version of PM but still have the problem.

Any ideas?!

PM has always treated transfers in this way (it's been discussed elsewhere on this forum). I believe Hardy's looking at making this behaviour optional (or similar) as part of the Budget overhaul that's going into v3.2.

As I mentioned, I've been using it heavily for 2 years, and never had this problem before.

Last week my budget screen for July showed a 'saving' of £5.20. Today it shows a 'deficit' of £3,592.84.

Why would anyone want it to treat transfers this way? Moving money from my current account to my savings account is not an expense!

I don't know, but some do and that's the way PM works. It's one of my issues with the budget mechanism too.

Ok problem solved!

I just deleted the blank category from the budget view and now all my historic savings/deficits are as they should be. Not sure why it suddenly started doing that...

If you're like me and don't categorise your transfers, the blank category is where all your half transfers should appear.

Glad you sorted it.

There will be an option in 3.2 that will give you control how you want transfers to be treated.

(The initial reason why was because I was originally just letting transfers handle the transfer in an out, but a lot of users were doing transfers and assigning a category to the transfer for things like their mortgage payment.)

Hello, i am a new user to PM, coming from Adarian Money Palm Os and windows. Ive been reading the forums on the budget overhaul for version 3.2. Cant wait to correctly use variable budgets as well as the transfer issue in budget. Any ETA on the new 3.2 release?
