Desktop connectivity for PocketMoney and MPG

SyncDocs help page

Postby HardyMacia » Tue Sep 02, 2008 3:08 pm

With the upcoming PocketMoney and MPG both using SyncDocs on the desktop for their connectivity there is going to be some support issues just on SyncDocs (especially it seems for Windows users) so I'm creating a forum to herd all the SyncDoc questions into one area.

To get started using SyncDocs:

If you can connect to the SyncDocs server, it tells you that files are sent successfully, but you can't find the files on your desktop computer, then make sure all your Firewalls are turned off.

I've gone through the instructions for this several times, & I still can't get SyncDocs installed & my data exported. What should I use for the Bonjour name & File types? Then is it necessary to verify the server before downloading?

I kept working until I got it to work. Turns out SyncDocs & the Swing Client had to be running. It was confusing.

I found the downloaded file in the download file under sync docs. But excel will not open the file. it automatically opens in parallels. If this is an iPhone app, why is it not readable by the mac? The file is visible on the mac, but greyed out. I hate using parallels, it keeps crashing on me.

Probably because whatever app to open .csv or .tdf files is in parallels. You can cmd-i on the .csv or .tdf file and pick what application on the mac side you always want to open the .csv or .tdf file. For excel to open the .tdf file you need to change the extension to .txt (PM 3.0 will default it to .txt by default).

SyncDocs working seamlessly. Here's how I set it up on Mac with 10.6.7... (sorry to duplicate any information)

1. I renamed my Shared Folder on different Macs so I can tell them apart.
{To do this, go to your User Home account. This is the house in the Finder Sidebar window or under Users on your disk image.}
2. Enable FIle Sharing for your User Home account. To do this...
Go to System Preferences>Sharing and then check File Sharing
Highlight the name of your Shared Folder (under Shared Folders) and you should see your User Home Account (under Users).
Enable "Read & Write" privileges for your User Home account.
Or, you can enable all Administrators
3.
Under Options, enable "Share file folders and folders using AFP". Also check your User Home account
(Make a note of your AFP server address)
3. Install SynchDocs and launch.
Under Setup, give Bonjour a recognizable name (e.g."imacpm") for that computer. Make sure "Bind to all addresses" is checked. Also check "Use user directory for downloads." My port is set at 8080. Enter your server AFP address (numbers only).
4. Go to System Preferences>Security>Firewall>Advanced>SyncDocs
Make sure you enable it to receive incoming connections. Check "Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections"
5. OpenSync Docs, then PM on your iPhone... and you should see your Bonjour name (e.g. "imacpm)

Javagirl500 -

Finally, step by step directions...hallelujah and thank you javagirl500! The only problem that I had with the directions above, is step #5.

I opened Sync Docs, then I opened PM on my iPod Touch and exactly where should I see the Bonjour name? I didn't see it anywhere. When I click on the Sync button in Sync Docs, I get a dialog box that says to "Launch the handheld application that requires syncing, or choose Sync or Sync with Syncdocs" So I opened PM, and then what?

Do I drag my PocketMoneyDB.sql into Sync Docs first? Should I click on the sync icon (lower left corner) in PM then click on the pocketmoney sync button or wi-fi transfer button? Your instruction were great - can you continue? Thanks!!

3. Make sure that WiFi is "ON" on your iTouch and launch PocketMoney on your iTouch.

4. On the PM Accounts page tap on the icon in the lower left corner (it looks like a window with an arrow coming out)

5. In the next screen tap on the "Wi-Fi Transfers" button.

6. On the Wi-Fi Transfers page, tap on the "Restore from Desktop" button.

7. On the next page tap on "SyncDocs"

9. Back on your computer, SyncDocs will have a message window asking if it is OK to delete the file from the list:

10. Click on "OK" and if you are finished, quit the SyncDocs application.

That's not what happens on mine. When I click on the wi-fi transfers button, if I click on "restore from desktop" I get a red button that says "delete and restore" and a message above that says "Restore will delete your current PocketMoney database and replace it with what is sync'd down."

If I click on the "Import from Desktop" or "backup to desktop" (instead of restore from...) I get a screen that gives me an url to enter into my browser.

That does work but is a hassle. So, I must be doing something wrong, but I have followed the steps above exactly, tho I will go back and check the steps again.

Btw, thanks for the help - I really do appreciate it!

Okay, I finally got the wi-fi transfer to work. Here is what I did, step by step.

1. Open Finder on your computer, under the 'house' put your SyncDocs Folder

2. Open preferences->security->Firewall->add "SyncDocs" set to "Allow incoming connections" check radio button "Set access for specific services and applications"

3. Preferences->Sharing->check "Fire Sharing"->under Shared Folders->add the SyncDocs folder (that is located in your 'house'->under users add you and enable 'Read & Write" (Also, make a note of your computers name located at the top)

4. Make any updates to the PocketMoney Desktop application on your computer and File->Save into the syncdocs folder in the house (will create the PocketMoneyDB.sql file)

5. Open the SyncDocs application ->Setup ->Bonjour Name enter your computer's name (step 3 above) make sure your port matches the port on your handheld device (wi-fi transfer button in lower left corner -> PocketMoney Sync -> Port)->Check Use user directory for downloads->ok

6. Drag the PocketMoneyDB.sql from the SyncDocs folder in your house into SyncDocs application window

7. On handheld device, Wi-Fi Transfer button->Wi-Fi Transfers.... ->Import from Desktop -> your computer's name should show up, click it and the transfer should take a couple of seconds and you'll get a message saying the transfer was successful, quit and restart the app, you will also get a message on your computer in SyncDocs asking to remove the synced files, click ok.

That is it. If anyone sees anything I did wrong - especially where the firewall is concerned, please let me know.

Now, if I could only get the PocketMoney Sync to work.....

BTW, I assume by 'house' you are referring to your User Home Folder. The shorthand symbol for it is the tilde: ~

So if I wanted to tell you where to find the PMD plist, I'd write "go to ~/Library/Preferences/PocketMoney.plist"
