Importing CSV to desktop PM

Postby Kat » Sun Sep 26, 2010 6:38 am

I have purchased the Pocket Money iPhone app, and am using the Windows desktop software on the 30-day trial.

What I would like to do with PM is import all my historic banking transactions, which I have converted to CSV format, into the desktop then sync with my iPhone. Is this possible? I have searched the online documentation and the forums but cannot find anything, but apologies if this has been covered and I've missed it.

http://www.catamount.com/desktopApps.php
Under "Still to come"
• QIF/OFX/CSV import and export

To get the CSV data into PocketMoney, import the CSV file into PocketMoney on your iPhone, then sync it to the desktop. If the CSV file columns are in the correct order, then you can use SyncDocs, web browser, or email the csv file to your iphone to import it.

We'll be adding the importing of QIF/CSV files to 1.1 of PocketMoney for Desktops.

I was having issues with inaccurate data after syncing from iPhone PM to PMD (Mac) so I deleted all the data from PMD. I then attempted to transfer my data from PM to PMD in order to start fresh on PMD, however I completed the transfer with PM set to client thus I lost everything. I too would like to import my bank statements (.csv) to recover my data. I have tried everything I can think of. Import with SynDocs, email, PM Sync. After using SynDocs, PM says that it received 1 file and to quit and relaunch. When I do this there is no change in PM. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sam,

What happened was that you deleted all the accounts from PMD then sync'd so PMiOS complied and deleted all your accounts. What you needed to do to start fresh in PMD what you need to do is go to File > New and create a new database then sync to that.

To import your bank statements, pick something other than CSV. Does your bank support OFX/QFX files? These are the best ones to use. Next would be QIF. Lastly would be CSV, but the CSV files require you to match up the columns to what PM is expecting. One you get the OFX/QFX file, drag and drop it into the SyncDocs window, andin PM iOS choose the WiFi Transfer > restore from desktop. When finished tap quit button in PM and restart it. If you have other bank data to import, then choose "wifi transfer > import from desktop" for the rest of your transfers. The restore from desktop wipes out your PocketMoney database so that you can start fresh, but you won't want to do it on every bank file.

HI,
This is kind of long so i'll ask the short question first; should i be able to export a .csv from PMD, edit it in Excel and then import back into PMD and have the changes show up in PMD as long as i don't change the column headings or the order of the columns?

Since PMD and PM have default categories and some of them are different than my original import of my quicken data i wanted to make everything in PMD and PM iPad consistant, that is i want old transactions to fall into the same categories, with the same ID as new transactions so that reports are easier to manage.

So, i did an export of all my transactions to a .csv, opened it in excel, made the edits i wanted, not only to categories but I also corrected some typos that i had in some entries.
I didn't change any of the headings so all of the columns had original heading names and were in the same order as when i did the original export.

I thought if i imported this edited .csv back into PMD all of my transactions would look like my .csv file. Didn't happen. i got a major internal error and had to start a new database by syncing my desktop with my iPad.

I'm going to try it again and see what happens and then i'll make sure i save the error message to send.

Did you try to re-import it as a NEW database or were you trying to import it into a current database?

Dunno. I suggest you send an email to support@catamount.com describing what you tried and include the error log.
