MatchLens 1.0 – equivalence lens calculator

matchlens_splash_460_1In my last e-newsletter I asked readers if anyone had any applications they’d like to see on the iPhone. Don Smith from Indelible Pictures, a customer of mine since the Newton days (Newton’s been dead for 11 years), needed a custom application for his work. Don hired me to write MatchLens.

Don still carried his Apple Newton around with him on all of his films shoots because the Newton had an app that performed a complicated lens equivalence calculation that he used often in his line of work.

What does MatchLens do? Imaging you are scouting a location for your a scene in your next epic motion picture. You aren’t going to carry around a quarter million dollar camera with you, but you can bring your Canon PowerShot to frame up the shot, then use MatchLens to calculate the what lens is needed to achieve the same field of view with a High Definition Sony F-35.
