SyncDocs: Backup and Restore for PocketMoney® and MPG™

In order to backup and restore your PocketMoney and MPG data and preferences to your desktop, you need to follow a few steps.

INSTALLATION:

  1. Download SyncDocs (the desktop component) by click on this link.
    OS X download from SourceForge
    Windows download from SourceForge
Save the SyncDocs.jar java Windows file or SyncDocs.app (OS X) where you would like to have your backups stored.
  2. Make sure port 5353 (Bonjour Service) is opened in your firewall software or you disable your firewalls
  3. Launch SyncDocs.app (OSX) or SyncDocs.jar (Windows) (*If it doesn’t launch, then you need to install Java.)
  4. Enter a name for the Bonjour Name and click OK. This name will appear in a list on your iPhone which you will later select.

You have now completed the setup of the Desktop component.

PERFORMING A BACK-UP:

  1. Launch SyncDocs if it is not already running.
  2. From within PocketMoney or MPG, go to the Accounts or Vehicles View and tap on the arrow icon in the lower right corner.
  3. Select “Backup to desktop…”
  4. Tap on the name that appears the list that matches the name you entered as the Bonjour Name when installing SyncDocs.

That completes the backup procedure.

On your desktop, you will see a folder named “downloads.”
In it you will find these two files:
•com.catamount.pocketmoney.plist or com.catamount.mpg.plist
•PocketMoneyDB.sql or MPGDB.sql

You are free to move these files and archive them as you wish. The set of three files represents a complete “backup.” Each time you perform a backup, these three files will be copied to the download folder. If they exist already, they will be replaced with a new set of files.

I recommend creating folder with the backup date and moving the backups into that folder. For example in your SyncDoc’s folder you would have downloads/20080901/ and copy your PocketMoney or MPG data files into there so you have a some chronological ordering of your backups.

PERFORMING A RESTORE:

  1. Launch SyncDocs if it is not already running.
  2. Locate the three files created from a previous backup and drag them into the SyncDocs window.
    •com.catamount.pocketmoney.plist or com.catamount.mpg.plist
    •PocketMoneyDB.sql or MPGDB.sql
  3. From within PocketMoney or MPG, go to the Accounts or Vehicle View and tap on the arrow icon in the lower right corner.
  4. Select “Restore from backup…”
  5. Tap on the name that appears the list that matches the name you entered as the Bonjour Name when installing SyncDocs.
  6. Tap Quit and relaunch PocketMoney or MPG.

That completes the restore procedure.

PERFORMING AN IMPORT:

  1. Launch SyncDocs if it is not already running.
  2. Drag and drop your PocketMoney or MPG for Palm pdb files, or QIF files into SyncDocs window.
  3. From within PocketMoney or MPG, go to the Accounts or Vehicle View and tap on the arrow icon in the lower right corner.
  4. Select “Import from desktop…”
  5. Tap on the name that appears the list that matches the name you entered as the Bonjour Name when installing SyncDocs.
  6. Tap Quit and relaunch PocketMoney or MPG.

That completes the import procedure.

PERFORMING AN EXPORT: (PocketMoney)

  1. Launch SyncDocs if it is not already running.
  2. From within PocketMoney, go to the Accounts or Transaction list view, adjust the Customer filter if you only want to export certain transactions, and tap on the arrow icon in the lower right corner.
  3. Select “Export…”
  4. Tap on the name that appears the list that matches the name you entered as the Bonjour Name when installing SyncDocs.

That completes the import procedure.

On your desktop, you will see a folder named “downloads.”
In it you will find a file with a name in the format of PocketMoney-yyyymmddThhmmss.qif.

    Pocket money, Awesome app.
Is there something to sincyng in the web (in google apps for example) instead of sincyng in desktop?

    Cordially,
    German

  3. Hardy Macia says:

    German,

Currently, PocketMoney only supports syncing to the desktop computer (Windows, OS X, or Linux).

Hi Hardy: Great application. I’ve been using it for 6 months and love it. I recently moved over my library of iTunes applications from a PC laptop to a Macbook. I can see PocketMoney in iTunes under the “Application” library but Apple Support is telling me NOT to sync my new iTunes library with my iPhone because all the data in PocketMoney will be lost. If I backup the data on my iPhone with the Macbook using SyncDocs, can I use that backup to restore back the data once I synced the iTunes library and erased all data on my iPhone?

    Thanks

  5. Hardy Macia says:

Yes. Use SyncDocs to backup your data, then you can sync with iTunes, if iTunes loses your PM data, then you can use SyncDocs to restore your PM data.

I am thinking of purchasing a 3rd gen iphone… I currently have Quicken Premier 2009 for windows (running on a VMware instance on a intel Mac).. can I import my existing accounts and balances to pocketmoney. can I export transactions (qif) to my windows quicken..

  7. Hardy Macia says:

Yes, you can import /export your data to and from Quicken running in Windows using VMwave. I’m assuming it works like Parallels and I test SyncDocs to iPhone connections with MS Money/Quicken in this way.

  8. Tj Krooss says:

So I have now used PM for just over two months and have become rather dependant upon it, as it evolves to my budgeting needs.

My only issue is that the wifi has stopped working on my phone and i have no way of backing up my data. I am sure by this coming March I will be upgrading to iPhone 3g(s) from 3g.

Is there anychance that there will be a wireless way to back-up & restore. Perhaps through Microsoft exchange or even sending the files through email?
Thanks again for getting me organized!

When I press the name I made up on my itouch it doesnt say connected or anything. it takes a couple of minutes and then just says Invalid server. how do i get it to sync up with Syncdocs?

  10. Hardy Macia says:

It sounds like you have an issue with a fire wall.
    http://catamount.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=324

Try turning off the firewall in the control panel / security settings. Also, if you are on windows, even if you turn off the firewall you need to go to the advance setting and make sure you turn off all the exceptions too. I’ll be adding email backups in version 3.0. Version 3.0 will be a 3.0 OS only version which is required for some features such as attachments in email..

  12. Marlene Johnshoy says:

I synced successfully with just some test account info in my iPod Touch. Then I tried to import all my accounts from having them in Pocket Money on my Palm (Clie) – I pulled in 8 pdb files from PM and MPG (love your apps!!!) – and now even after a restart, PM won’t open at all on my Touch.

Help? where do I start troubleshooting this?

  13. Marlene Johnshoy says:

Nevermind, I figured out how to delete the program from my Touch and then reinstall it. But this time I used the QIF file and it worked very well. It was the pdb files that crashed it.

  14. Hardy Macia says:

There is a bug in importing PDB files. I actually fixed it today. If you want to send your pdb files to support@catamount.com, I can import them and send you out the pocketmoneydb.sql file for you. The fix won’t get onto the appstore for a month.

  15. Frank Kiehner says:

Just tried to import my QIF file into Quicken and it says that it no longer supports QIF files. It wants to see a QIX file and QIF is old technology. Any assistance on this issue?
    Thanks

  16. Hardy Macia says:

What version of Quicken do you have? It works with Quicken 2009 and latest version of Quicken for the Mac?

Some versions of Quicken stopped importing some types of QIF files, but the work around was to change the type from !Type:Bank to !Type:Cash and import it that way.

I am trying to make Pocketmoney work with two users on shared accounts. We tried using sync-docs to export and import between us, but that resulted in duplicate entries in each of our accounts. Is there a good solution to this or are you by any chance working on one? We really love your product and would like to keep using it, but we very much need to be able to somehow ensure that, at the end of the day, we have matching data on each iphone even though each of us is entering data separately.

  18. Hardy Macia says:

    Hi Sean,

You need to export recent changes only when you export, if you want to import them into your partner’s account.

I’m working on a desktop version to go along with PocketMoney 3.0. It should be ready by the end of the month.

  19. Steve says:

Just started using pocketmoney with MS Money, however when I import a specific account from MS I also get closed accounts being transfered. am also finding that the opening balanceis being displayed as opposed to the closing balance, can anyone help ?

  20. Hardy Macia says:

    Steve,
The closed accounts that are transferred are probably the result of the account you transferring having old transfers to the closed accounts. You can go to the view options and show only total worth accounts or non-zero accounts to hide the closed accounts.
As for the opening balance being display, is it a cleared transaction, and the closing balance non-cleared? If you tap on the <>CLeared balance, <> Current balance label you can toggle through the various options.

  21. Steve says:

    Hi Hardy,

Thanks for your response, managed to sort out the the closed accounts problem, thanks for your help, however still got a problem with current balance and cleared balance. When I import from MS Money I am getting a current balance and cleared balance, however the current balance is not correct and the cleared balance appears to be what should be the current balance. Am I a complete thick head, or doing something very stupid, your help is required, thanks

  22. Steve says:

Can anyone help me with my lasting posting on 21st November as finding this problem really frustrating, Thanks

  23. Hardy Macia says:

Steve,See my email from support@catamount.com for support on issues. Or use the forums, blog posts aren’t very good tech support venues. (at least with this blog software or how it is setup).

  24. CARLTABS says:

Hi, does PM work with ms money 2003? i am struggling to sync files from pm to ms money. it states that file is corrupt and to retry, but upon doing so the same message is displayed? thanks, carl

  25. Hardy Macia says:

    Carltabs,

Yes, it should work. Typically a corrupt message from MS Money means that either the file encoding is wrong, or you are trying to import a QIF file with multiple accounts in it. Make sure the file encoding in the prefs for PM is set to “Western ISO Latin 1″. And you need to export the QIF file from the account’s transaction register (not from the account balances screen) so that PM exports the QIF file in the single account format.

  28. Daniel says:

    Hello,

I have 3 years of previous financial information stored in a personal Access file (not in Quicken). Is there an easy way to import this file and its splits into pocket money without having to type them again? Maybe by formating the Access file into an CSV file that can be read by PM?

    Thank you

  29. Hardy Macia says:

    Daniel,

Splits in your access file? You are probably better off trying to get it into a QIF file if you want the splits retained you have setup. The other option is to migrate your data from access directly to SQLite. You can install PocketMoney and then backup some sample PocketMoney data with splits so you can see how everything is setup in the PM SQL file. Once your data is in PocketMOneyDB.sql then restore that to PM.

You can use CSV or TDF but you will lose your split info. You’ll have to import them as separate transactions.

    Please help
I dont have this QIF file.
I did a standard backup and now i can’t restore, because it wants a QIF file from me and i have only a SQL database… :-(

  31. Hardy Macia says:

Choose “Restore from backup” and drag your PocketMoneyDB.sql file into the SyncDocs window.

  32. Alisha says:

I have no option to “Restore from backup”. All I have is backup to desktop, restore from desktop, import from desktop, and export to desktop. Help please.

  33. Alisha says:

Am launching SyncDocs and it says the files are transferred, but in actuality, they aren’t. How do I get my info back onto the app?

  34. Hardy Macia says:

    “Restore from desktop…” I mean.

Is the sql file you are trying to restore named “PocketMoneyDB.sql” <– it must be exactly that.

  35. Alisha says:

Nope, it wasn’t, I named it with the date it was saved. Went back and changed it to your suggestion and that did it. Thank you so much!

  36. Erin says:

When I switched to OS 4 on my iPhone, I lost all of my account transactions and the app was loaded new. Any way to restore my informations?

  37. Hardy Macia says:

You can try to recover your data from the iTUnes backup file: http://catamount.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=182

Then use SyncDocs or web browser to restore the PocketMoneyDB.sql file to get your data back.

  38. parksorn says:

I have a problem with the font. When I exported data from PM to desktop via syncdocs using CSV, it appeared in excel sheet that the local alphabet (Thai) couldn’t be read. Please suggest me how to correct the font. I tried to change the data transfer mode from unicode-8 to unicode-16, but the syncdocs couldn’t be opened and the error pop-up saying that I have to change the setting of syncdocs which I couldn’t understand the message and couldn’t fix it. Please advise.

  39. Justing Hu Chang says:

I have a problem, I exported my files to my desktop, QIF, TDF, and CSV Files. Accidentally my database is gone. Is there any way for me to restore my data file with these exported files? I tried dragging the QIF files into the java app, the accounts are restore but they only have the first transaction. The TDF and CSV Files, don’t work, they import a new account with no transaction and information. Any way to restore my information?

  40. Hardy Macia says:

    Justing,

    See this thread: http://catamount.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=182&p=5580#p2682

You are probably better off trying to extract your data from your itunes backup first and restoring the PocketMoneyDB.sql file.

It sounds like your QIF file only has recent transactions in it and not a full backup. Open the QIF/TDF/CSV file with a text editor to see how many records you have in it. If it has all the data then it should be restoring it all. (The QIF file for version 3.0.7 has a bug during import where the amounts will be missing on some transactions, but I’ve fixed this for the next release.)
