PocketMoney for iPhone review: “Changed My Life”

Friday, April 16th, 2010

I received a call today from a customer in the Dominican Republic telling me I had to go check out this review posted today about PocketMoney because PocketMoney saved this guys life. Here it is…

Changed My Life:

And I mean that literally. For years I have tried to do a budget and track spending (Quicken, Money, even carrying a pen and notepad). I always failed because I would forget small transactions (ie. Buying a soda at the gas station) I had NSF [non-sufficient funds] fees on a regular basis.

I was always late in bills because I never had enough money. And finally I had to file bankruptcy. But then this app came along. I could enter a transaction before the cashier could even give me the receipt.

I suddenly never missed transactions anymore. After a month and a half if using it, I had the data I needed to build a budget. And I did so. Now when I want to buy something, this app let’s me know if I have enough money to do so. After 5 months of using this app consistently I now have a 4 digit positive balance and have paid every bill the day I get it in the mail.

I kid you not. This app CHANGED MY LIFE. And no I do not work for whoever made this thing. Hell, I have used it for half a year and just now realized I should give them a review in here.

Seriously this is a LIFE CHANGING app. It saved my home, my marriage, and my happiness. Bought a new house a few months ago. Much bigger. No extra income either. But I can afford it now thanks to my strict budget. Thank you for this app

“Failed to load NSMainNibFile MainWindow”

Friday, April 9th, 2010

I was porting CheckPlease to the iPad, and when I tried out the German localization I got a black screen with error “Failed to load NSMainNibFile MainWindow” in the debug console.

I’ve been localizing my apps since the first release and typically never have an issue.

Googling didn’t find an answer, but I finally discovered the problem.

I had created a new project for CheckPlease for iPad. By default it set “Localization native development region” to English, which is well and good since that is where I am, but I use the “en.lproj” naming standard for adding xibs to my project. When the user sets their device to another language it will look in the en.lproj folder for the xib file if there isn’t a xib in their language’s lproj folder.

So “English” versus “en” was the issue. I set “Localization native development region” to “en” and everything is working again.

PocketMoney for Windows/OS X beta 1

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Beta 1 of the desktop version of PocketMoney was sent out to the current PocketMoney beta testers this afternoon.

The plan is to release Beta 2 at the end of next week with the iPhone to desktop syncing to the current beta testers, then beta 3 I hope to make a public beta for the desktop portion. The iPhone portion will still be limited due to Apple’s policies of the number of ad hoc testers I’m allowed to have.

Basic budget in PocketMoney

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Most users want to track their spending by expense category so they can control their spending on Entertainment or Dining Out each month, but other users don’t want that much complication. They just want to set a budget for the month and that’s it. You can do both in PocketMoney and here is one way to do the later.

First go into PocketMoney Settings > Display Options > Budgets and turn on Show unbudgeted and Include unbudgeted in total.

Then head back to the Budgets screen and you want to create an income budget item for what you want your budget for the month. Whether or not you are putting income into this category doesn’t really matter, but if you have a salary or income for the month it will give you a better picture of your spending.

On Budgets screen tap Edit, select Salary, set Type to Income, set Period to Monthly, set Amount to 4000. Tap Save and Done.

You can then collapse each budget section if you don’t want to see the breakdown of your unbudgeted spending. If you do want to see it, then you might want to tap on the budget view icon (eye), and set the Sort On to Actual so it will sort the budget items by amount spent instead of alphabetically by category name.

As you can see from the right image, I’ve budgeted $4000 for the month and spent $111 so far. Saved is showing my the difference between my actual income and actual spent.
