Eudora to OS X Mail

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

I’m going to try to convert from using Eudora to OS X’s Mail app for all my email. I’ve been using Eudora for email for about 15 years, but it hasn’t been updated to take advantage of any of OS X features. I’ve tried using Mail after each major OS X upgrade, but always fell back to using Eudora, so I’m trying again on Snow Leopard.

With help from Eudora Mailbox Cleaner 4.9 all of my mailboxes have been imported into Mail. It took about 4 hours to convert all of the mailboxes.

Now, I have to retrain all of my neurons to use a different mail program. This means answering emails will be slower, but hopefully I won’t get to far behind.

PocketMoney 2.3 for iPhone is now available.

It fixes several glitches when running on the new iPhone OS 3.0 system software, and adds several new features including the ability to import OFX/QFX files from your banks, sort capabilities for transaction register to organize your data how you want, and bi-weekly budgets & custom start dates budgets to better match up budget cycles with your paycheck.

What to do if your favorite apps aren’t working on iPhone 3.0?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Are your favorite apps crashing or not working correctly after you updated to iPhone 3.0 yesterday? It is very likely the author has already submitted an update to the application, and now it is sitting in Apple’s review process waiting for the reviewers to go through the application with a fine tooth comb to see if any of a thousand things fail on their checklist.

What might fail? One developer told me his update for 3.0 was rejected because he had his technical support/pre-purchase sales phone number in the description on the AppStore. Apple had him remove it, but after 3 days it still hasn’t been approved.

I’ve been answering dozens of emails today about PocketMoney 2.2.1 not working under 3.0. All I can tell customers is that the 3.0 bugs are fixed in PocketMoney version 2.3, the application is in Apple’s review process, and it might be approved in the next one-two weeks, but if Apple rejects it, then typically the 1-2 week process will start over again from the beginning.

Now 1-2 weeks might not be terrible if the application is in the entertainment or game categories, so the user won’t be able to play a game for a week. It’s not a big deal, but users trust PocketMoney with their financial data on a daily basis and for a critical application to be delayed is a major issue.

Apple listens to customer feedback and if they have thousands of customers complaining about the time it takes for applications to be reviewed, then maybe, just maybe Apple might fix their system. (Here is an interesting post on a session at developers conference about AppStore.)

If you want to do something proactive about this issue, then here is the link to the AppStore feedback:

I’d suggest picking “Purchase(s)” > “Already Owned” and following the steps to file a request for speeding up the applications review time. This might have the benefit of letting Apple prioritize which applications they should fast track through their review process, even if they don’t speed up their overall process.

40th Birthday

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I took the day off today for my 40th birthday. Woot. It was just like my 30th and my 20th, although I was one goal short of a hat trick tonight in my indoor soccer game.

Submitting ‘I Am Poor’ for iPhone, yet again

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

After sitting in the “in review” process for a few months. I got a call from Apple letting me know what the hold up was…in the about box I said “This app was initially rejected by Apple…”. I’ve removed this historical fact from the about box and have resubmitted.

All in all, it was a very good phone conversation. I was extremely calm through the whole call (which is very hard to do when dealing with the AppStore review process). Last week I had Bootlegger Lite rejected because Apple claimed I was up selling within the application, but I’m doing the exact same thing I am doing in CandyWars Lite which was approved. I do a similar up sell in CheckPlease Lite where there is a giant banner at the top of the app saying upgrade to CheckPlease if you don’t want ads, and CheckPlease Lite has been available for months also. I have no idea how the App Review Team is going to deal with all of the In App Purchase Up Sells…since most apps will be up selling new levels or gear within games. Obviously, either App Review Team needs to get some documentation out there about this, or they will have modify their internal process for rejecting apps based on up selling.

PocketMoney 2.3 update (update)

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Apple gave us the iPhone 3.0 golden master at WWDC this week, this resulted in a very nasty bug in PocketMoney that wasn’t in prior versions. I fixed the bug and resubmitted 2.3 to the AppStore today so it’s doesn’t look like PocketMoney 2.3 will be on the AppStore in time for the 3.0 iPhone launch. (Thanks Apple :-/)
