CheckPlease 4.0 submitted to Apple. Awaiting approval.

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

I submitted version 4.0 of CheckPlease to Apple today.

Version 4.0 Changes:

• Made the icon square again.

• Keypad buttons are shinier.

• Heads up display that allows entering of subtotal, tax, check total, and tip.

• Help Screen displayed first time application is launch

• Added Watch Video button to Help Screen that launches the the CheckPlease video tutorial.

• Preference to set the category to post transactions to in PocketMoney.

• Increased number of people to split the check between to 100.

• Bug fix: a tip for very small check totals (less than $2.00) could become negative.

CheckPlease Lite does not include the Heads up display.

TipOut: tip calculator for bartenders and waiters

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

There is a new tip calculator on AppStore unlike any of the rest not because of a new layout or background, but because it is designed for to be used by the people who you give your tip to…the bartenders, waiters, and waitresses.

When Paul presented the idea of TipOut to me, I was immediately intrigued because of the uniqueness of the idea after all bartenders and waiters/waitresses need to tip their barbacks, runners, and bussers.

While programming TipOut, it became obvious that divvying out the tips at the end of the night can be a tedious and sometimes complicated process. Paul’s TipOut makes it simple, plus it lets the user keep an historical record of their tips.

And as a bonus, users can post how much they made in tips at the end of the night to PocketMoney so you can keep your accounting and budgets updated with one tap.

PocketMoney 2.2.1 submitted to Apple

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

I uploaded version 2.2.1 of PocketMoney to the AppStore this afternoon.

Version 2.2.1 fixes the bug that is causing PocketMoney to crash when launching or crash when creating/viewing a transaction.

I also asked Apple via a couple different avenues to make this a priority update so it doesn’t take 5-10 days to be approved, and now I’m crossing my fingers in hopes they fast track the update approval. It’s unlikely, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

See the Crash with 2.2 forum thread for workarounds to this bug.

If PocketMoney 2.2 crashes on you..

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

I have just updated to version 2.2, and now I can’t add or edit any record!
Pocketmoney terminates back to the Home screen.

I’m submitting version 2.2.1 today to fix this bug. I will ask Apple to rush it through, but it’s unlikely and will probably still take 5+ days to work it’s way through Apple’s update process.

Here is one work around:
1. Use SyncDocs to backup your data with “Backup to desktop…”
2. Then use SycnDocs to “Restore from desktop…”. You want to restore the PocketMoneyDB.sql file you just backed-up and the PocketMoney Default Prefs file (click link to download it). Restore the two files at the same time.

This will replace your current prefs file with the default prefs file and get you working again. “Category above Payee” will be turned on in the Edit Transaction View Options and you can’t change it, but when I release 2.2.1, then you’ll be able to turn it back off if you wish.

* If you launch PocketMoney and it crashes on you, then you have fewer options. If you have a recent SyncDocs backup, then you can delete PM and restore you PocketMoneyDB.sql file (do not restore the preferences file: com.catamount.pocketmoney.plist). There are also ways to extract PocketMoneyDB.sql from your latest iTunes backup.

Organizations speak out to get Baby Shaker app pulled

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Apple’s pulling of the Baby Shaker App has stirred up media interest in other applications which have been rejected in the past and the process around the rejections. I’ve been answer calls this afternoon about DopeWars and I Am Poor. Two of my apps are still rejected, but unlike Baby Shaker never got approved. And, I think their content is much less objectionable than a simulated shaken baby syndrome application.

Update on DopeWars: I renamed it and released it as CandyWars where you buy and sell illegal candy — Apple approved CandyWars. I also tried renaming it as DupeWars where you try to dupe other fencers by buying and selling electronics and other fenced goods, but “Dupe” is too close to “Dope” according to the phone call I got from Apple — so Apple rejected “DupeWars”.
